Party asks residents to continue to back mayor and his commitment to steer city towards a brighter financial future

DA Tshwane supports Mayor Brink's decisive action amidst employee strikes

4 August 2023

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane reaffirms its unwavering support for Mayor Brink's decision to suspend 41 employees who participated in illegal strikes and engaged in acts of intimidation. In addition, the resolute action taken to arrest 15 employees for public violence underscores our commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety of our city and its residents.

Mayor Brink's approach reflects a strict adherence to established labour processes while effectively addressing those who choose to undermine the well-being of the city. The DA commends his dedication to restoring order while safeguarding the interests of all Tshwane citizens.

The recent interim interdict issued by the Labor Court, declaring the ongoing strike as unlawful, further highlights our commitment to fair and lawful proceedings. Following this decisive move, the City Manager had issued ultimatums in line with due process.

We recognise that the 16,000 City of Tshwane employees deliver crucial services to the city and we extend our appreciation to those who have remained steadfast in their commitment to better our city. While pursuing equitable raises for our employees remains a priority, it is imperative that we prioritise the stabilisation of Tshwane’s finances.

The difficult decision to temporarily forgo salary increases is rooted in our determination to prevent job losses and to ensure the financial stability of the city.

It is unfeasible for the City of Tshwane to increase its wage bill by R600 million in the 2023/2024 financial year. Therefore, the Council has undertaken the responsible step of applying for exemption, a resolution the DA voted in favour of.

We acknowledge the inconveniences faced by residents due to temporary service delays, and we call upon the community to stand united with Councillors as we navigate these challenging times.

The DA in Tshwane remains resolute and asks residents to continue to Back Mayor Brink and his unyielding commitment to steer our city towards a brighter financial future. Through collective efforts and steadfast unity, we are confident that Tshwane will overcome these challenges and emerge stronger than ever.
