Phiyega: We regret unintended consequences of our statement - SAPS BOC

Provincial commissioners say their comment was not intended to pre-empt process initiated by President Zuma

Media Release by Board of Commissioners Media Statement from National Media Centre

13 August 2015

Pretoria- Subsequent to the interaction between the SA Police Service Board of Commissioners and the Portfolio Committee on Police on 12 August 2015, the Board of Commissioners wishes to correct the misconceptions created following the statement issued on 1 August 2015.

The Board distances itself from allegations of mutiny within the ranks of the SA Police Service that have been widely covered in the media. The purpose of the statement was to refute such allegation.

Nonetheless, the Committee was of the view that the statement had unintended consequences in that it created an impression that the Board was pre-empting the process that the President has initiated following the release of the Marikana Commission’s Report.

The statement was never intended to undermine any processes which are currently taking place within the SAPS. The Board of Commissioners respect such processes.

To that extend the BOC regrets the unintended consequences of the statement issued.

The BOC would like to engage further on this matter as we believe there is information which the BOC was unable to share.

The Board will continue to respect all processes and continue to lead the organisation in a professional manner and ensure that the communities are safe andsecure.

Furthermore, the statement issued therefore was never intended to cause any harm to the organisation and the community, hence all the Provincial Commissioners apologised during the session with the Portfolio Committee for the misconceptions that were created as appositely summarised by the Deputy Minister of Police, that the Board should have issued a short statement to distance itself from the mutiny and other ills levelled against the organisation.

The Board of Commissioners once again re-iterates that it shall continue to lead the SAPS and protect our communities.
