The FF Plus welcomes the decision of the Constitutional Court that registered South African voters living overseas can now vote.
It was a unanimous decision of all the Constitutional Court Judges (see here) and the court issued a further order that the government has to re-open the fifteen day period in which people could apply for special votes and which had already lapsed.
The FF Plus had already on various occasions said that the party is prepared to stand up for the rights of South Africans. The fact that the FF Plus had run the risk of taking this issue to the highest court proves this.
Dr. Pieter Mulder, Leader of the FF Plus, expressed his gratitude to Mr. Willem Richter and all who had been involved in this case and for the support which the party had received from various sections of the population. The party is immediately starting with a strategy to make South Africans living overseas aware of the fact that they are allowed to vote in this election and to assist them administratively with this venture.
South Africans living overseas who have already registered as voters now have time until the 27th of March 2009 to notify the Electoral Commission of their absence from South Africa, as well as to notify them of where they intend casting their special votes. They have to cast their votes at the local South African missions in the country where they find themselves on the 15th April 2009.
If SA citizens living overseas want to find out whether they are registered, they can access the IEC's website at www.elections.org.za or sms their ID-numbers to 32810.
