Religious Leaders add their voice on Tafelberg Site issue – ANC WCape

Ruling party says leaders affirm view not to sell but develop land into affordable housing

ANC In the Western Cape commends Religious Leaders's position on Tafelberg Site

29 June 2016

ANC in the Western Cape commends the Religious Leaders in the province for adding their voice in urging the Provincial Government not to sell the multi-million rand former Tafelberg School site in Seas Point.

The ANC has always been clear that such a piece of land would serve both a socio-economic and social cohesion purpose were it to be used to build integrated low cost housing particularly for people who have always worked in this part of the city but whose cost of living has been prohibitive for them to be residents.

All the religious leaders, Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town Thabo Mokgoba, Reverend Alan Storey of the Cape Town Central Methodist Church and Imam Rashied Omar of Claremont Main Road Mosque, are correct in affirming our point that such affordable housing developments would go a long way in building the New Cape Society, integrated, cohesive and growing together.

The ANC and all Community leaders agree that the Cape Town spatial development that is still predominantly racialised must come to an end hence we cannot pace our development to the gait of camels and donkeys. There is no time to waste.

We condemn the Democratic Alliance which despite the imperative of ensuring that all available land now prioritizes such integrated developments, the DA is busy nursing fears of the few against the interests of many, to understand fully the basic need for a united, rooted in common purpose, common planning and common endeavour City's development.

We call on the Provincial Government, which owns this 1.7ha piece of land to release it for this development.
