SIU must provide full reasons for Nkandla report delays - James Selfe

DA CFE says unit blames non-compliance of third parties who've failed to submit necessary responses

SIU must provide full reasons for Nkandla report delays

09 July 2014

I have written to the Head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), Adv Vasantrai Soni, requesting that he provide further details regarding the delays in the SIU's investigation into the spending of over R246 million expenditure on President Zuma's private residence at Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.

This comes after we received a letter from the Head of the SIU attributing the delays- of the much anticipated report- to the noncompliance of third parties who have not provided the Unit with the necessary responses.

In my letter I have requested Adv Soni provide clarity on the following:

Who these two respondents are;

What is their relationship with the Department of Public Works;

What work did these respondents perform; and

What steps the SIU is taking to ensure their timeous compliance?

Furthermore, given the urgency of this matter, I have also asked when the final report is scheduled to be submitted to the Presidency.

With the taxpayer footing the R246 million bill for these "security upgrades", it is important that South Africans and their representatives in Parliament are given access to the full report so that they can interrogate its findings, and its accuracy.

The DA will not let this gross abuse of public funds go unanswered in the fifth Parliament
