Students must vote on language policy – AfriForum Youth

Kovsies must stand up for Afrikaans, says group

Kovsies must now stand up for Afrikaans

AfriForum Youth encourages students from the University of the Free State (UFS) to make their voices heard and stand up for Afrikaans. Students may voice their opinions by voting for option C in the UFS’s survey among students on the university’s proposed language policy.

“It is of the utmost importance that students vote on the language policy. This survey may determine the future of Afrikaans at this institution, and Afrikaans people simply cannot afford to give up Afrikaans at yet another institution,” said Eduan Dupper, Spokesperson for AfriForum Youth.

The UFS is in the proses to revise its language policy after complaints by students that separate Afrikaans and English classes encourage racial separation on campus. AfriForum Youth has submitted a proposal during the public participation process earlier the year.

“Kovsie students must stand together and prevent submission to the demands of a small group of radicals, as much more is at risk than merely Afrikaans. You could ask yourself the question: ‘What is next if Afrikaans has been removed?’” Dupper added.

Students at the UFS can vote online at the following link: http://api.ufs.ac.za/LanguagePoll/Login.aspx?Lang=eng

They can also vote on campus at:

-Kestell Ladies Residence, Gazellie;

-Fish Tank, SRC Building, Thakaneng Bridge; or

-Conference Hall, South Campus.

Afrikaans is under pressure at a number of tertiary institutions in support of so-called “transformation”. It seems as if this transformation is aimed at removing Afrikaans in favour of English, from which few people will benefit.
