Teachers to close for September holidays - SADTU

Unions warns departments about the No Work No Pay rule

Recovery programme for all Grades during September holidays:

The Department of Education has decided that the September holidays stand and therefore there will be no recovery programmes for Grades R to Grade 11.

The Department of Education will negotiate with Unions the accelerated learning programme for all the grades in the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) starting from Monday next week. Once an agreement is reached, it will be implemented in 2011.

SADTU's position as adopted by the NEC on all matters related to the recovery programme stands. The position says any recovery programme shall cover grades R to 12 and teachers shall be remunerated for any extra work done. We shall continue to fight for better conditions for our members and the learners who have lost the opportunity to learn due to the 2010 FIFA World Cup and public sector strike.

On the No Work No Pay:

The implementation of the No Work No Pay rule shall be suspended with immediate effect pending an agreement to be negotiated in the ELRC starting from Monday next week. We warn all those departments that have applied the policy without any management plan to stop any further deductions. We condemn such actions as they seek to undermine the ELRC which is a recognized Council where we negotiate matters of mutual interest for labour peace. Undermining the Council can only worsen the already volatile situation with unnecessary consequences to education as a whole.
