Tlokwe speaker convenes illegal council meeting - DA NWest

Party says sole purpose of meeting was to attempt to elect a new ANC executive mayor

Tlokwe: ANC Speaker convenes illegal special council

The DA lead coalition in the Tlokwe Municipality in Potchefstroom decided not to attend a special council meeting this morning illegally convened by the speaker, Barei Segotso.

Segotso sent out a notice for a special council meeting contravening the council's rules of order and the municipal structures act.

The sole purpose of the special council was to attempt to elect a new ANC executive mayor.

Segotso failed to respond to letters from the DA pointing out her illegal and irregular attempt.

She was also warned that she is transgressing the structures act in forcing municipal officials to contravene legislation. No other agenda point addressing delivery was on the agenda for today's special council meeting.

The DA will again formally request speaker Segotso to convene a continuation of the 2nd of July, the meeting with a long list of urgent items which impacts on delivery.

Segotso has since the last chaired council meeting during May failed to convene the continuation council meeting as requested by the DA and instruction from High Court Judge Tuchten.

Her failure to convene council meetings for the past three months is related to the ANC not being prepared to be in council while they are the minority.

The continued presence of MEC Manketsi Tlhape in the Tlokwe council chambers is clearly involved in the illegal attempts which confirm the questions regarding her ability to lead Local Governance in the NW Province.

It is reasonably expected from a MEC to guide municipalities legally.

The DA Lead coalition will again refuse to participate in any illegal convened council meeting.
