UCT investigates allegations against student
17 November 2014
The University of Cape Town confirms that one of its students is currently being charged with assault and crimen injuria in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court in Cape Town, following an off-campus incident that took place in Claremont in January this year. The student is studying a Bachelor of Commerce at UCT and is in his first year (see Weekend Argus report).
UCT is currently establishing the facts of the matter and is investigating the allegations. Once the university has completed its investigation, it will decide whether it will take any further steps against the student.
The case in the court is a state prosecution, and UCT is following the case and will take serious note of the outcome.
Because of the fact that the case is being pursued by the state and now also investigated by UCT, we are unable to comment on the details until the cases are finalised.
