Matric 2015: Twenty-two schools obtain a 0% pass rate

The DA can reveal that 22 schools obtained a 0% pass rate in the 2015 National Senior Certificate examinations (NSC).
This is according to data extracted from the Department of Basic Education’s 2015 School Performance Report.
12 of the 22 schools that obtained a 0% pass rate are in KwaZulu-Natal, six in Gauteng, two in the Eastern Cape and one each in the Northern Cape and Limpopo. [see table below]
The number of 0% schools increased to 22 this year from 16 in 2014 and 9 in 2013.
It must be acknowledged that in some 0% schools only one or two learners wrote the NSC. However, in at least 14 of the 22 0% schools 10 or more learners wrote the NSC examinations. All 37 Grade 12 learners at Kwabhamu Secondary in KwaZulu-Natal, for example, wrote and failed the 2015 NSC.
This is a shocking state of affairs whichever way you look at it. We believe that the right to a decent basic education enshrined in our Constitution is being denied to the children at these schools.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has identified Children’s Rights and Basic Education as one of its key focus areas. The DA will therefore write to the Chairperson of the SAHRC, Adv. Mabedle Lawrence Mushwana, to investigate whether these schools are violating the rights of their learners to a decent education.
No child deserves to go to a school that cannot produce a single matric pass. The performance of these schools is an affront to the dignity of every child that attends them.
