Results of the Municipal By-elections held on 22 February 2023

During the by-elections contested yesterday, 23 February 2023, in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces, the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained their seats won in the 2021 Municipal Elections.
The new DA councillors are:
- Archer Brendo Carlo Heynse, in ward 02, Blue Crane Route Municipality – EC102, Eastern Cape. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 49,21% of the total votes cast compared to 59,70% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 53,40%
DA hang on in Somerset East. DA hold Ward 2 (Somerset East Aeroville) in Blue Crane Route in Sarah Baartman DA 49% (60%) ANC 49% (35%) EFF 2% (5%). DA win by 10 votes. ANC won Aeroville by a landslide. DA also hurt by a lower relative turnout in the town centre. Poll: 53% (56%)

- Lorraine Elizabeth Smith Johnson, in ward 05, Blue Crane Municipality – EC102, Eastern Cape. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal elections with 46,50% of the total votes cast compared to 51,41% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 58,90%.
DA hold Ward 5 (Upper Somerset East Boschberg) in Blue Crane Route. DA 47% (51%) ANC 41% (42%) PA 8% EFF 4% (7%). Poll 59% (51%). PA affected the DA in Francesvale and beat the EFF for 3rd place.

The new ANC councillor is:
- Ferguson Morris Moses, in ward 01, Sol Plaatje Municipality – NC091, Northern Cape. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 32,18% of the total votes cast compared to 40,70% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 61,64%.
Unofficial-ANC hold Ward 1 (Roodepan Platfontein) in Kimberley in Sol Plaatje. ANC 32% (41%) DA 25% (37%) PA 25% (11%) Ind-Settley 13% SPSDF 2% (1%) EFF 1% (2%) ACDP <1% (<1%). Poll: 61% (54%)-GOOD (7%) not on ballot. PA win over DA& GOOD voters. ANC lose support to Settley.
