ANC and DA retain seats in ECape and NCape by-elections – IEC

Patriotic Alliance continues to make inroads at expense of DA, wins 25% in Kimberley ward

Results of the Municipal By-elections held on 22 February 2023

During the by-elections contested yesterday, 23 February 2023, in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces, the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained their seats won in the 2021 Municipal Elections. 

The new DA councillors are:

- Archer Brendo Carlo Heynse, in ward 02, Blue Crane Route Municipality – EC102, Eastern Cape. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 49,21% of the total votes cast compared to 59,70% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 53,40%

- Lorraine Elizabeth Smith Johnson, in ward 05, Blue Crane Municipality – EC102, Eastern Cape. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal elections with 46,50% of the total votes cast compared to 51,41% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 58,90%.

The new ANC councillor is:

- Ferguson Morris Moses, in ward 01, Sol Plaatje Municipality – NC091, Northern Cape. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 32,18% of the total votes cast compared to 40,70% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 61,64%.
