THE Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal can today disclose that three companies with ties to provincial Speaker and former Health MEC, Peggy Nkonyeni, have conducted business with the provincial government to the tune of R347 000.
The information, which focuses on the period 2006 to date, forms the basis of a parliamentary reply, by KZN Finance MEC, Ina Cronje, and dated 17 October 2011, to questions posed by the DA. Most damning is a payment of R222 300, in 2008, to one of Nkonyeni's companies for the supply of "medical wheel chairs", at a time when she was provincial Health MEC. Other services provided by the various companies, some as recently as this year, include venues and facilities, advertising and marketing and catering.

According to the reply, the Speaker is listed as a director of 13 companies, revealing the extent to which she is involved in personal business pursuits, despite the key role that she is expected to fulfil within the KZN Legislature. A list of these companies follows;
- Desari Seventeen
- Ama-Corp 63
- Inhlansi Business Enterprise
- Posernegy Mining and Construction
- Zascoset
- Associated Companies
- Sizacento
- Pluricare

Corruption within the supply chain sector of provincial government has long been an issue but Ms Nkonyeni has taken it to new heights. A cloud already exists over her head, with her name linked to the "Three Amigo's" scam and now we have this gross abuse of the system. She has jeopardised the reputation of the Speaker and the good name of the House. Yet, politically, she appears to have nine lives.
The DA will write to the Public Protector's office to call for an investigation into Peggy Nkonyeni and her business dealings with the provincial government. We call on provincial Premier, Zweli Mkhize, and other members of the executive, to immediately suspend Ms Nkonyeni from her duties, pending the outcome of a full investigation and a disciplinary hearing.
Statement issued by Sizwe Mchunu, DA KZN provincial leader, October 28 2011
