Incompetence a plague on our healthcare system – EFF WCape

Party demands an immediate and thorough investigation into Wendy Pijoofs death

Statement by the Economic Freedom Fighters Western Cape on the tragic death of Wendy Pijoof at Eerste River Hospital

29 July 2024

As the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Western Cape we would like to take this opportunity and express our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Wendy Pijoof, who tragically lost her life on 4 July 2024 due to alleged gross medical negligence at the hands of Dr. Ibrahim Ismael of Eerste River Hospital. This tragic incident, where Wendy is said to have been administered with the wrong medication, is a stark reminder of the systemic failures and incompetence which continue to act as a plague on our healthcare system.

We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the actions of Dr. Ibrahim Ismael and the management of Eerste River Hospital for the role they played in cutting short the life of Wendy. It is unconscionable that a life was lost due to such a preventable error, reflecting a disturbing lack of professionalism and accountability within our public health care institutions. The negligence displayed in this instance is not merely an individual failure but a glaring indication of the broader systemic issues that need urgent redress.

Furthermore, it is utterly reprehensible that the Pijoof family, already grappling with their grief, were asked to pay for Wendy's medical report. This demand adds insult to injury, showcasing a blatant disregard for the principles of compassion and Ubuntu. Access to critical information regarding medical treatment, especially in the face of such a grave incident, should be a basic right, not a commodified service. This practice of withholding medical reports unless fees are paid is a disgrace and a barrier to justice.

The EFF demands an immediate and thorough investigation into Wendy Pijoofs death. Dr. Ibrahim Ismael must be held accountable for his actions, and Eerste River Hospital must implement stringent measures to prevent such tragedies from recurring. Additionally, we call for the abolishment of any fees associated with accessing medical reports, particularly in cases involving malpractice or negligence. This would require the amendment of the Promotion of Access to information Act No.2 of 2000 to exclude any fees when it comes to a request for patient medical records held or in possession of state institutions.

Our healthcare system must prioritise the well-being and dignity of all individuals, ensuring that such tragic and avoidable deaths do not occur. The EFF will not rest until justice is served for Wendy Pijoof and her family, and until the systemic issues in our healthcare system are addressed and eradicated.

Justice for Wendy Pijoof! Economic Freedom for All! Healthcare System That Cares for All!
