20 September 2024

On behalf of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADEL), we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr. Parks Tau, on the approval of the Legal Sector Code under section 9(1) of the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Act. This significant achievement marks a pivotal moment for our sector and aligns with our commitment to fostering transformation within the legal landscape of South Africa.

NADEL extends its gratitude to the Legal Practice Council who through its Transformation Committee, set-up the Steering Committee and whose tireless dedication and hard work have been instrumental in bringing this vision to fruition. Your commitment and perseverance are commendable and deserve our utmost appreciation. The objectives outlined within the Legal Sector Code reflect the spirit of the preamble of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which emphasizes the urgent need to rectify past injustices while promoting inclusivity and equity.

Mr Mvuzo Notyesi, the President of NADEL indicated that “the approval of the Legal Sector Code bears testament to the commitment of this administration to accelerate transformation and create meaningful opportunities for previously disadvantaged individuals within the legal profession. These efforts have provided a framework necessary to guide our sector toward achieving our B-BBEE objectives.

NADEL notes that the approval of the Legal Sector Code is only the beginning. It sets the stage for us to collectively embark on a journey toward a more equitable legal profession. We look forward to actively supporting the implementation of the Legal Sector Code and the ongoing transformation of our sector, ensuring that it reflects the values enshrined in our Constitution.

The LPC will continue to oversee implementation of the code. It is our responsibility that we ensure that dedicated Councillors who understand the transformation agenda sit on the LPC.  We call on all legal practitioners to vote for Adv. Anton Katz SC, Adv. Chandre Brown, Mr. Asif Essa, Ms. Ncumisa Nongogo and Mr. Zincedile Tiya.  We are confident that they will ensure that it is done.
