STAFF PROTEST AT YUSUF DADOO HOSPITAL

The Yusuf Dadoo Hospital in Krugersdorp is in turmoil as angry staff have staged protest demonstrations at lunch-time every day last week.

They say that there have been irregular management appointments, that certain tenders were corrupt, and equipment shortages have not been addressed.

Grievances include the following:

• incompetent managers
• a broken switchboard that keeps dropping calls
• patients sometimes sleep on the floor because of a bed shortage
• a contractor failed to complete the building of the nurses residence
• an electronic information board was left unfinished by a contractor

A broad range of staff have picketed, including doctors, nurses and NEHAWU members.

The Gauteng Health Department has been slow to address the problems at this hospital.

Urgent intervention is needed to address what I believe are valid grievances.
